Abstract

Pentothal (thiopentone sodium), ketalar (ketamine) and epontol (propanidid) were injected intramuscularly into albino rats, and morphological changes at the injected site were observed.
1. Saline-injected control group did not show any specific changes.
2. Pentothal (2.5%) caused a mild inflammatory change in 6 hours and marked inflammation with necrosis in 3 days after injection, which subsided in 10 days after injection. Ten-fold diluted (0.25%) pentothal also caused mild degenerative and inflammatory changes, but 40-fold or more diluted ones elicited little inflammatory change.
3. Ketalar (5%) caused a delayed, mild inflammatory change not sooner than 3 days ¢¥after injection, which persisted for more than 7 days. Even 40-fold diluted (0.125%) one, elicited a slight inflammatory reaction.
4. Epontol (5%) caused an infiltration of neutrophils and exudation at the injected site 6 hours, and the formation of cellular granuloma consisting of neutra, phils 3 days after injection, which were replaced by fibroblasts and giant cells in the granuloma 10 days after injection. Two-fold diluted (2.5%) epontol caused U moderate, and 10-fold diluted one (0. 5%) a mild¢¥ inflammatory change, but 40fold or more diluted ones did not cause any inflammatory change.
